Coexistence Expert
Vattenfall+Seagust is mindful of the need to coexist with its surroundings, minimizing negative impacts and maximising positive ones.
Coexistence a top priority
Both Vattenfall and Seagust and its owners have a long history of operating according to the high standards expected in Scandinavia, and Vattenfall has made coexistence a top priority when developing energy projects.
By building on research and extensive experience, it is possible to substantially reduce the negative impact on nature, including birds and fish.
Unique study gives positive results
For instance, Vattenfall has performed a unique study using radar and cameras to monitor bird behaviour around offshore wind turbines in the North Sea. The study shows that various bird species effectively avoid turbine rotor blades. In fact, not a single bird collision was recorded during a two-year period. While the study focused on specific species, it contributes to building a knowledge basis that will allow offshore wind to coexist with birdlife.
Nevertheless, there are concerns about the effects on specific bird species. Vattenfall is testing various modifications, such as the colour of turbine blades or using AI-based systems that identify species that are especially vulnerable to collisions and temporarily halt turbines. The company has also constructed breeding structures tailor-made for specific bird species to boost their population.
Site location
Fish and the fishery industry is another area where coexistence solutions are needed. A key consideration is carefully choosing sites to limit the impact on spawning. In addition, Vattenfall has implemented several measures to preserve marine life in its projects, such as limiting the noise during pile driving.
By building on research and extensive experience, it is possible to substantially reduce the negative impact on nature, including birds and fish.
Strengthening communities
On a societal level, coexistence also means strengthening the communities where we operate. We are mindful that the offshore wind industry depends on communities seeing positive effects, even beyond increased energy supply.
Employment opportunities
The most obvious is employment opportunities, and the Vattenfall+Seagust participants have a long history of creating jobs, many of them along the coast and in smaller towns and rural areas. Vattenfall has set up a number of community programs related to its wind projects around Europe, including offering apprenticeships to local youths.
